Electronic Shelf Labels (ESL) are revolutionizing price labelling in the retail sector. While supermarket chains are already using the technology successfully, the petrol station sector is still cautious but interested. The advantages are manifold: from increasing efficiency through automated price adjustments to significant cost savings and AI-supported price optimization, new opportunities are opening up for the petrol station trade.
Christoph Lange, Key Account Manager at OMS Retail and expert in ESL integration, particularly emphasizes the opportunities for SMEs: "ESL price tags can be a way for small and medium-sized petrol stations to operate with the efficiency of larger chains while maintaining their independent business model." The training required for staff is limited - one to two hours is usually enough for basic operation.
While large chains such as Jet and Aral are not yet using ESL systems, initial pilot projects, such as at ORLEN Germany, show that the industry is on the move. With a payback period of 18 to 36 months and falling investment costs, the technology is becoming increasingly attractive for petrol station operators of all sizes.
